“A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF PROVEN METHODS ARE KEY IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PRODUCTIVE SKILLS THAT SUPPORT LIVELIHOODS AND ENHANCE THE CULTURAL FABRIC OF OUR COUNTRY”
Traditional craftsmanship is an intangible cultural heritage integral to the social fabric of our country. The sustainable livelihood approach is another way of thinking about objectives, scope, and priorities in skill developmental activities. It helps formulate development activities that are people-centred.
In addition to the sustainable approach, specific ways and means support livelihoods and enhance the cultural fabric of our country. However, the effectiveness of these methods must depend on various factors such as the context, resources available, and requirements. Therefore, it is crucial to identify a suitable skill set based on these factors in supporting a community.
There are numerous expressions of traditional craftsmanship, tools, clothing and jewellery; costumes for festivals and performing arts; storage containers, transport and shelter; decorative art and ritual objects; musical instruments and household utensils and toys, both for amusement and education.
Many of these objects are one-time or made to be used for a short time, such as those created for festival rites, while others may become heirlooms passed from generation to generation.
In our initiatives to impart skill and self-employment schemes, training women in cooking for preschool children, nutrition in schools, yoga and meditation, wire knitting, toy making, village survey and screening, case finding, paramedical work and rehabilitation of leprosy disabled instituted.
